Skiing in Hawaii? Things you Never Knew Possible

Posted by in Ambassador, Deuter USA Blog Posts

The big island of Hawaii is a land of extremes and contrast. Massive lava fields dot the landscape and liquid hot magma flows from Kilauea into the Pacific Ocean, a roiling and steamy sight to behold, the earth growing before your very eyes. These same earth building forces pushed the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the two highest points on the big island, above 13,000 feet. Both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa get snow in the winter months, their 13,000+ foot summits a shockingly different world than the…read more

Getting The Right Gear For The Tahoe Backcountry

Posted by in Ambassador, Deuter USA Blog Posts

It’s no secret that the Lake Tahoe backcountry is an outdoor recreation paradise. Pretty much any outdoor activity you can imagine is on tap for adventurous outdoor enthusiasts in the area. North Lake Tahoe recently put together a series of short online videos highlighting human-powered recreation in Tahoe, and they asked me to help out with the backcountry skiing shoot. I was happy to oblige. Here’s the short video they produced promoting backcountry skiing, and especially safety, in the Tahoe area. The pack I used for this trip is the Deuter…read more

Welcome Back Winter!

Posted by in Deuter USA Blog Posts

Anyone who lives and skis in California or the Pacific Northwest knows that a “good” winter has been a long time coming. Four years in a row of below average winters, the last two being among the worst on record, have left skiers throughout the Golden State, including myself, questioning their choice of where they live to ski. Over that time, ski areas have struggled and backcountry skiers have been limited to a handful of higher elevation zones. This season, however, thanks to a strong El Nino, we are off to…read more

Tips and Tricks: packing a backcountry ski pack

Posted by in Ambassador

Over the past 13 years of backcountry skiing I’ve developed a bit of a routine with my packing for days of ski touring. Generally speaking, everything that I bring with me for a day in the mountains is stuff that I deem absolutely necessary, there is very little fluff or extra weight. One thing I always try to do is put heavier items…read more

You like mountain biking, right?

Posted by in Deuter USA Blog Posts

“You like mountain biking, right?” asked my friend and professional photographer, Ryan. “Yeah, I ride all the time, I’m as into mountain biking as I am into skiing,” I said. “Well, I’m shooting a feature article for Bike Magazine about South Lake Tahoe,” he said, “You ever ride down there?” In the non-skiing months, I ride my mountain bike nearly everyday, but it’s not everyday that I get asked to shoot pics while doing it, especially for an article in Bike Magazine. While I may have my picture taken somewhat…read more

Come for the skiing, stay for the mountains

Posted by in Ambassador, Deuter USA Blog Posts

One of the best things about living in a ski town is that having fun in the mountains doesn’t end with the ski season. Most mountain communities are year-round adventure playgrounds and North Lake Tahoe, where I live, is no exception. I moved here for the skiing and stayed for the endless outdoor recreation. Living in Tahoe has been a dream come true. All winter I’m minutes from world class skiing, and come summer I have hundreds of miles of singletrack trails accessible from my front door.Every spring as the snows…read more
