Can I use my pack as a carry-on?

Each airline has a different policy regarding carry-on size. Please check with your airline about their carry-on policy and size limitations, and then check the dimensions of your pack on our site.

How do I adjust my torso length on my pack?

How do I adjust the child carrier cockpit on my kid carrier?

How do I fit my pack?

Why does the Deuter SL system fit women so well?

We have established a female team of professional athletes and designers for the development of our SL packs. “SL“ stands for Slim Line. The entire pack, including the carrying system, is designed with a woman’s physique in mind, but can also be used by anyone with a smaller torso and frame.

Features of the SL system:

  • A slightly shorter back length (to accommodate a shorter torso). The SL back system with its lower shoulder strap anchor point is a bit shorter than the standard version.
  • A more conical shaped hip belt, which further accommodates a greater arch in the spine. The SL hip belt anchor points are set closer together, and are slightly curved angling diagonally upward. The fins are also pre-shaped so that the fastened hip belt has a conical shape delivering a customized fit.
  • SL shoulder straps are both narrower in width and shorter in length, have narrow tapered ends and smaller buckles. They avoid chafing in the armpits and eliminate pressure points in the chest area. Further, the SL shoulder straps are set closer together. Thus, they stay in place and do not slip off the shoulders.
  • The SL shoulder straps have an S-shape and feature softly lined edges on both sides, allowing them to curve around sensitive areas, and not chafe.

Who else can wear SL?

Our SL rucksacks are designed to fit the average athletic female build. However, since not everyone fits the norm it is likely that standard models also fit female users perfectly well and vice versa: SL models fit men with slim builds and younger guys.

How do I load my gear into a pack?

Please visit the Pack Backpacks page for instructions.

The pack’s center of gravity should sit close to the body and ideally at shoulder height. This way it is positioned over the body’s center of gravity and the pack won’t pull backwards.

How to properly load your bigger capacity rucksacks (from about 30 l): Put the sleeping bag, down equipment and other light objects in the bottom compartment. Place midweight gear such as clothing on the top towards the outside. Heavy equipment– tent, food, big jackets – above shoulder height, close to the back. Put small, often used items in the lid pocket where they can be easily grabbed. To avoid swinging, big wind surface or wetness, minimize the number of items you strap to the outside of the pack and keep them as compact and small as possible. In general, keep an even weight distribution, in particular for side pockets, in mind. Use stuff sacks to get organized. Waterproof sacks are also a safe alternative to a raincover. In easy terrain (hiking routes, flat trails) the load’s center of gravity should sit higher, but in difficult passages (alpine routes, Via Ferrata) a bit lower and thus closer to the body’s center of gravity. This packing system leads to a more forward leaning position, yet it provides more balance compared to a higher center of gravity.

Where are Deuter backpacks made?

In the early 90’s, we realized that if Deuter was to survive as a competitive brand known for high-quality equipment (based on technical sewing skills), we could no longer manufacture in Germany. Deuter established a relationship with a single supplier in 1991 based in Vietnam– that marked the beginning of a close partnership starting with just 35 sewing machines. Today, there are over 2,500 employees who work on the exclusive production of all Deuter packs and accessories. Through the years, mutual understanding, close cooperation, and the sharing of ideas has turned a business partnership into a true friendship.

What are Deuter’s sustainable practices?

Since 2008, Deuter has been a member of Bluesign – an independent organization that establishes standards for sustainability, health and safety in the textile industry. Deuter is committed to meeting the strict Bluesign standard and having an environmentally friendly production cycle.

Are your reservoirs BPA free?

Care Tips

How do I maintain my Streamer hydration bladder?

deuter_streamer

deuter_streamerOpen the Streamer – (1) Remove the tube from the bladder. – (2) Take the bite-valve from the mouthpiece – turn the valve socket to the middle (3) label (quarter turn), remove and take apart (do not remove the 90° angle piece (4) from the tube). – Rinse and clean it with warm water and mild detergent – never use boiling water. – Rinse again thoroughly with clear water.

Dry with paper towels and hang it upside down. When fully dried, put the pieces back together. Mind to keep the filled Streamer from direct sun exposure. Thoroughly clean it after use with soft drinks. Use cleaning tablet in case your hydration system is extremely dirty. If necessary put the empty hydration system in the freezer and clean thoroughly after defrosting – an easy, effective way of killing bacteria.

Storage: Make sure you store your open and clean Streamer in a clean and dry place.

What is the best way to extend the life of my sleeping bag?

For storage, the fill needs plenty of space to regain and retain its loft. Therefore, store the sleeping bag in a dry place loosely in a large storage sack or pillowcase. Only use the compression sack for transportation.

Stuff it, don’t roll it

When you roll the sleeping bag, the fill is always ‘abused’ on the same spots. This can damage the construction. Stuffing also allows better packability.

Thorough ventilation

After each use, ventilate the bag thoroughly – e.g. by spreading it on the tent. Minimise washing since it reduces the insulation quality. Only wash the sleeping bag when really necessary. Try to remove small stains with a sponge and lukewarm soap water.

Maintenance

If you wash it – do it gently:

  1. Close all straps and loosen all drawcords.
  2. Turn the sleeping bag inside out.
  3. Only use special down or synthetic fiber detergents.

Hand wash

  • Soak the bag in plenty of lukewarm water, gently squeeze and then rinse several times – do not twist or wring the bag!

Machine wash

  1. Set the machine on the delicate cycle (30°C), rinse several times OR repeat washing program using NO detergent and do not spin! The washing machine should have a capacity of at least 5 kg.
  2. Carefully take out the wet, heavy sleeping bag to avoid damage of the fill or down chambers.
  3. Gently squeeze as much of the water out as possible. Do not wring it out!

Tumble dry

  • Tumble dry (min. 7kg) on low (30°C). Add tennis balls for down and tumble dry until the full loft is regained.

Drying on a laundry rack

  • Open it up and spread it out, never hang it up! Down will take several days to dry. Gently fluff up the down clots by hand several times a day. Synthetic fibres dry quickly and do not need to be fluffed up.

What is the best way to clean by backpack?

Place the backpack in a tub or shower filled with water and wash with ph-neutral soap. Dirt and stains can be easily cleaned with a soft brush. Salt stains on the carrying system can be removed by simply washing with soap and plenty of water.
Make sure to always store the pack in a dry place!

Is my backpack waterproof?

For the first years, the rucksack material offers great water protection. However, in heavy rain water will seep through the zippers and seams. In alpine regions, for climbing or ski tours you should use waterproof packsacks in the rucksack to keep your gear 100% dry. The advantage is that the attachment straps then remain free for material, such as ice axe, skis, poles or snowshoes. For hiking and trekking backpacks use a rain cover. Also, impregnation won’t last very long on older models. And impregnation (spray and bath impregnation) in the strap’s material can lead to skin irritation.

Can I wash my backpack in the washing machine?

No – abrasion wears out the material (PU coating) and will in the long run damage the pack. Also, detergents are often not washed out properly. This could lead to skin irritation for sensitive skin types. A chemical reaction of sweat, detergent and UV rays further damages the material.

Backpack Tips & Tricks

Where can I find product information?

What size pack will fit me best; Standard or SL?

When sizing a pack it’s important to factor your height, body type, unique size/shape and experience and intentions for use. Together, your personal set of features are unlike any one else’s – and all should be considered when you select a pack. To accommodate the many unique bodies of outdoor adventurers, Deuter packs offer standard fit as well as an SL fit, meaning “slim line.”

SL packs were designed in close collaboration with Deuter’s female ambassadors to offer dimensions and carrying systems that fit smaller, more compact bodies. While designed to fit athletic women’s bodies better, the SL models are also great for slim men and younger guys who have shorter torsos or narrower frames. For example, a man with the classically triangle-shaped body of climber – broad, strong shoulders, very narrow, trim waist, might fit an SL pack better for its narrower back. In fact, Jordan Romero, the youngest person ever to successfully climb Mt Everest at age 13 used an ACT Lite 60+10 SL on his summit bid.

Standard packs offer a longer length for longer torsos, wider and more broadly set should straps, and wider over-all back dimensions.

Another difference between the SL and Standard packs is that the hip belt on SL models that is attached at an angle at anchor points to better accommodates the curves of hips comfortably.

Measure your torso
SLPackFit_measure

  • Backpacker has an excellent video to show how to do this – its helpful to have a partner!
  • Standard Deuter packs fit torsos between 17”– 22” long, approximately
  • SL packs fit torsos between 13” – 20” long, approximately
  • Note: many of our packs utilize our Variquick adjustable shoulder harness system that allows users to dial in a precise fit

Consider the Width of Your Shoulders and Back, Broad or Narrow?
SLPackFit_Step2

  • Be sure the straps are spaced comfortably on your shoulders. Too narrow and they may cut off circulation or dig into your neck. Too wide can put uncomfortable pressure on your shoulders and cause imbalances in weight distribution.
  • Shoulder straps in SL models tend to be between ½”-1” narrower at the attachment point than Standard models
  • The best way to find the right width pack is to try one on at your local retailer, weighted to simulate the way it will feel when fully loaded.

Once you have selected the correctly sized pack, be sure it fits properly once loaded.
SLPackFit_Step3

  • Use these directions to adjust your backpack appropriately so that most of the weight is on your hips and the pack is balanced and comfortable.
  • At the start of your hike, pull on your pack and adjust the straps for fit and comfort. About 20 minutes down the trail, stop and readjust your back to be sure it is still balanced and well positioned after the pack and gear inside has settled a bit.

How do I adjust my Variquick shoulder harness?

The Variquick Adjustable Shoulder Harness allows you to customize the fit of your pack for your specific back length.

Fitting Your Pack
Use THIS GUIDE to fitting your pack to estimate the correct position where the shoulder harness should sit.

VariQuick_1

TIP: have a friend help you determine where the shoulder harness should sit. While you have the pack on, have your friend count the number of attachment loops down the webbing ladder from the top.

Remove the Shoulder Harness
Once you’ve determined where the shoulder harness should sit, unfasten and pull out the Velcro attachment strap from the webbing ladder.
VariQuick_2

Position the Strap
Slip the Velcro strap beneath 4 attachment loops, the uppermost one being the top attachment loop your friend counted to.

VariQuick_3

TIP: If you use less than 4 attachment loops, the pack can cause instability and the strap could come loose while in use.

Secure the Harness
Fold over the Velcro strap to secure the shoulder harness.
VariQuick_4

Check the Position
Put the pack on again to be sure the shoulder harness is sitting in the correct position and adjust accordingly if needed.

How can I modify my Guide Pack?

Packs in the Guide series have been ruggedly designed for trustworthy performance in demanding alpine climbing and skiing conditions. With thoughtful “bells and whistles,” these packs are built to accommodate skis, ice tools, ropes, sharp gear, and all the essentials for mountain environments. But sometimes, conditions or plans don’t require all those awesome extras. For some trips, every ounce counts and all excess needs to be eliminated. Which is why the Guide packs have been designed to be highly customizable.

Here are tips for modifying your Guide to minimize weight.

Removable hip belt:
The hip belt helps position the weight of the pack over your hips rather than directly over shoulders and back, which is anatomically ideal (our hips/legs can take more weight than our shoulders/backs). It also helps stabilize the pack against your back for better balance on uneven ground. But if you are wearing a climbing harness, the hip belt can get in the way of gear loops on your harness and be too bulky. The solution? Take the hip belt off.

deuter_guide_pack_1

  • On both wings of the hip belt, remove the gray webbing of the stabilizer straps from the buckles.
  • Tech tip: Pulling the webbing from the buckles will require a bit of effort and finagling. The webbing and buckles are meant to be snug when fitted together to ensure a secure fit when using the hip belt.

  • Slide your hand between the waist belt and the back of the pack to release the Velcro that secures the hip belt in place.
  • Holding the padded hip belt sleeve with one hand, pull the hip belt out of the sleeve with the other.

Weight savings = approx. 9.5oz

Removable foam mat:
The foam mat backing in the pack acts as stabilizer and cushion when using it as intended inside the pack. While on an adventure, it can also be pulled out and used as a sitting mat to keep you insulated from snow, ice or cold rock. But if you’re counting ounces, you can remove it and leave it at home.

deuter_guide_pack_2

  • Pull up on the orange Velcro tab and unfold the flap on the back sleeve.
  • Run your hands along the top of the mat to free up the top edge and corners of it for easier pulling.
  • Pull the mat out. Tech tip: The mat fits in the sleeve very snuggly. It helps to have a friend hold the bottom of the pack while you pull it out, or when removing it on your own, the tips/tricks writer finds it easiest to slide her arm all the way down the sleeve, hook the bottom of the foam mat with her hand and use her whole arm to pull it out rather than pinching and pulling from the top.

Weight savings = approx. 2.25oz

Remove the collar and lid:
The collar that connects the lid to the pack helps keep a rope in place if carried over the top of the main pack compartment. It also acts as a weather barrier to protect your gear if you are carrying a fully extended load and you find yourself at the center of a deluge. But if you have room to spare and ounces to count, take it off. Note: this requires permanently modifying your pack. Be sure you want to do this before you pick up your scissors!!!

deuter_guide_pack_3

  • Carefully cut off the collar that attaches the lid to the pack. DO NOT cut the webbing that attaches to the buckles on either side of the lid. The tips/tricks writer suggests you carefully leave a ¼ inch or so along both seams to be sure no important seams are accidentally cut.
  • Once the collar is cut off, remove the gray webbing from the buckles that cinch the lid to the pack.
  • The lid is now free of the pack and you are free of the weight!

Weight savings = approx. 4.75oz.

Removable stays:
The stays provide rigidity to the pack, stability and help distribute the weight. You can, however take them out if counting ounces is more important than the added stability.

deuter_guide_pack_4

  • Inside the pack, pull up on the gray webbing/Velcro tabs on the back of the pack (these are tucked a bit down into the mat sleeve flap.)
  • While pushing down slightly on the top of the webbing, pull up on the tab to release the stay.
  • Pull out the stays. Note that each is labeled “left” or “right” and that the label faces forward; this will help reinsert them properly later on.

Weight savings = approx. 3.15oz

Putting it back together:
The tip/trick writer recommends taking photos as remove each of the accessories for reference when putting it all together again. Here are a few directions to help:

deuter_guide_pack_5

  • Start with the foam mat. It is slightly asymmetrically shaped with a bit of a bell shape at one end. The wider, bell end goes towards the bottom of your pack. Shimmy the mat into the sleeve and pull the mat down from the bottom edge, sliding your arm down into the sleeve with it. With your arm down in the sleeve, smooth out the corners of the mat with your hand to be sure they are sitting flatly in place.
  • Slide the stays back into their sleeves putting the right stay in the right sleeve and the left stay in the left sleeve. Once in place, strap the Velcro down smoothly and tuck the ends into the flap.
  • Turn the pack over and slide the hip belt through the belt sleeve – note that the word “Variflex” on left hip belt should be positioned upright. Attach the stabilizer strap webbing to the buckles inserting it first through the back slot and then through the front.
  • Reattach the lid by inserting the gray webbing into the adjustable buckles at the back of the lid, first up through the back slot, then down through the front slot.
